The earliest recording
and playback devices were 'mono' or one channel, this allowed the
listener to hear the recorded information but without any spatial
information, you could not hear the wind instruments on the left
and the strings on the right in an orchestra recording for
example.
Mono systems are still used in places such as ensuites and
gardens where stereo information has little meaning, and may even
lead to unintelligibility of the sound due to multipath
interference.
