| Bi-Amp speaker wire |
It is possible to further improve
the isolation between bass and treble signals by dedicating an
amplifier to each frequency range and running separate speaker
cabling directly to the driver - with no need of a crossover.
This method of powering the drivers is called Bi or Tri amping
dependant on the number of amps used.
In an extreme case it is possible to provide an amplifier for
each driver in a speaker, and in a 7.1 surround sound system, where
each speaker had say three drivers, you would require 22
amplifiers! 21 for the speaker drivers and one for the
subwoofer, in these systems the amps usually sit with the
speakers which are matched with each other and the signals are fed
from the processor to the amps in ultra high quality balanced audio
cable.
